Hue, once the imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, is known as the cultural heart of Vietnam. Several sources claim that the name ‘Hue’ was derived from “Hoa”, meaning harmony, which could be the reason for the Nguyen dynasty to choose Hue as its emperor city. Lying along the banks of the Perfume River (Huong Giang) and embedded in the mountains, Hue has managed to preserve its grandeur and former glory along with its unique atmosphere. For more than a century, from 1802 to 1945 to be exact, Hue was the capital of Vietnam and the emperor’s domicile. Its citadel and the Forbidden City are truly important historical destinations that are worth-visiting. In 1993 the UNESCO declared a number of monuments in Hue as world cultural heritage sites.Read more – http://www.vietnam.com/listing/hue-4af35049eb7e7.html
Hue: places of interest:
Citadel and Imperial City: Resembling the style of the Forbidden City in Beijing, the citadel complex is built with two walls: the Outer Wall (Ngoai Thanh) and the Inner Wall (Noi Thanh). The Citadel complex is surrounded by the impressive Outer Wall, which is built from 1805 to 1832, 11 km length, 6 m height, with 11 gates, 24 towers, as protection against all kinds of intruders and enemies. Inside the Outer Wall there was a city-inside-the-city, where the inner circle of the emperor and their families resided. The Outer Wall is encircled by a moat (23 m broad and 4 m deep) which is now mostly covered by water lotus. Read more. – http://www.vietnam.com/listing/the-citadel-of-hu-hue.html
The Thien Mu Pagoda was constructed 1601 by Nguyen Hoang (1525-1613), who was the ruler of southern part of Viet Nam. He followed an old legend, saying that a Holly Lady has often appeared, who predicted that one day, a popular leader of the country will establish a pagoda at this hill for the sake of the country peace and prosperity. He then ordered to build this pagoda in order to fulfill the prophecy. The pagoda Thien Mu (Pagoda of the heavenly woman) lies on the bench of the Perfume River (Huong Giang), approx. 5 km von Hue, in the suburb Kim Long. It can be reached by taxi (appr. 4 USD), or – with more spectacular views – by boat (“dragon boat”) from Hue. Read more. http://www.vietnam.com/listing/thien-mu-pagoda-hue.html
The Minh Mang Tomb is one of the most interesting emperor tombs in Hue. It is situated 12 km outside the city, on Cam Ke Hill, on the west bank of the Perfume River and can be reached by car or – much nicer – by boat. Emperor Minh Mang (1820 – 1841) was the second son of Emperor Gia Long, who founded the last Vietnamese dynasty, the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945). He had been planning to build a tomb for himself as early as 1826. But it was not until September 1840, after fourteen years of looking for a suitable location that the construction of the tomb began. During the building phase, in January 1841, Minh Mang got ill and passed away at the age of 52. Emperor Thieu Tri, his successor to the throne, continued the task according to his father’s plans. Minh Mang’s corpse was buried in Buu Thanh in August 1841. The construction of the tomb, however, was not completed until two years later, in 1843. Tu Duc Tomb: Located in a narrow valley 8 km from Hue (Duong Xuan Thuong village), Tu Duc Tomb is one of the most beautifully designed complexes among the tombs of the Nguyen dynasty. Embedded in a lush pine forest, this tomb is the final resting place of Emperor Tu Duc (1848-83) who had the longest reign of all emperors of the Nguyen dynasty. As usual at that time, Tu Duc had begun planning and constructing his tomb long before he died in 1883. Thus, the major parts of the tomb complex were built around 1864-67. In his lifetime, the Emperor Tu Duc used the tomb as a palatial retreat together with his many wives and concubines. Read more. – http://www.vietnam.com/listing/tu-duc-tomb-hue.html
Khai Dinh Tomb: Emperor Khai Dinh, who ruled 1916-1925, has chosen slope of Chau Chu mountain, 10 km from Hue, as the location to build his tomb. The construction of the tomb was started on 1920 and lasted for 11 years. The architecture of this tomb is the most criticized of all the tombs of the Nguyen dynasty. The structure of the tomb (admission fee: 55.000 Dong) is of concrete elements with cement, a mixture of Vietnamese and Western concepts. It can be seen as an attempt of fusion building style or a symbol of the decline of Vietnamese culture during the colonial era; it depends on your view and mood. Lang Co Beach lies between Da Nang and Hue. Lang Co itself is a developing touristic area, where the natural beauty of the lagoon, the long beaches and the fishing village is still mostly untouched. On the way from Da Nang to Hue, just after passing the Hai Van Pass, while descending from the pass the very nice village of Lang Co with its nice white sandy beaches appears. Lang Co is an attractive, peninsula stretch of palm-shaded sand with turquoise lagoon on one side and very long beach facing the Pacific Ocean on the other. It’s a great place where lots of visitors make a lunch stop or spend the night. Read more. – http://www.vietnam.com/listing/lang-co-beach-near-da-nang.html
Hai Van Pass (Hai: ocean, Van: cloud) is a scenic pass on the road from Da Nang and Hue, on the National Road 1A in Vietnam. You have basically two alternatives: take the classic pass traversing the mountain or take the. If you have time, it is recommended to take the picturesque classic mountain road (length 21 km). The mountain road is used since many centuries, but has been paved by the French and then enlarged by the South Vietnamese and the Americans due to its strategic position.
